What is biblical coaching like?
This is a mini series for learning what biblical coaching is:
Clear coaching examples from the bible would be for example:
Shift in strategy for Moses from Jethro
Moses: It's unlikely that Moses every heard of coaching , but he learned about it early in his career as a leader of the children of Isreal. Apparently his days were typical of the one described in Exodus 18:13 Early in the morning, Moses would take his seat to serve as a judge for the people. He sat alone and hte people lined up and waited from the morning until evening to get his advice. It didn't take long for Jethro, Moses' father- in-law, to see that this was poor management and bad leadership." What you are doing is not good, " Jethro. said. " You and the people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it along"
Then Moses got a little coaching. He explained why he was managing like we was but Coach Jethro proposed a better way. Select some new candidates for leadership, he advised. Find people with integrity, people who are trustworthy, capable and God- honoring. Then train them carefully. Teach them how to do what you do and let them handle the simpler cases. Permit only the complicate issues to be referred to higher levels. "that will make your load lighter because they will share it with you,." Jethro concluded. "If you do this and God so commands, you will beable to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied."
Coaches are not the boss- they have no authority
Notice that Jethro was not an executive coach or Moses boss. They weren't working for the same company. Jethro didn't criticize or condemn the present system's inefficiency. Instead he did what what coaches do: He observed Moses' performance, made some observations, provided some options that gave a Vision for something better, and helped Moses clear some of the obstacles that were consuming his life. Perhaps Jethro stayed long enough to guide and consult with Moses on the day- day or week to week basis as the new policy was put into place.
We are Servants:
Coaching is a form of servant leadership that helps people accomplish their goals. This is a type of leadership that involves encouraging or motivating people upward to achieve their potential and goals. Contrast this with a leader who sits at the top of a company, organization, or church and passes orders down. When people have to obey orders or submit to dicatorial leaders, they tend to be resentful. They do what's minimally necessary, but they aren't motivated to develop their own gifts and abilities. However, when they are coached, guided, and encouraged, they're more enthusiastic, more inclined to grow, and often more inclined to grow and often more able to be self- motivating.
I realized that you don't really know what biblical coaching is and it's hard to explain because even Christ does transformation "in the moment." You can't truely know what biblical coaching is until you avail yourself of the experience. guidance and that is why I allow for a free coaching session.
Part II Mini-seminar- we will observe Christ and the way He coached.
